Emotional Eating vs Binge Eating & Questions You Need to Ask Yourself.

Emotional eating is when we use food as a way to deal with our feelings, rather than to satisfy physical hunger. This might look like reaching for comfort food when you're feeling down, stressed, or even bored. The food becomes a way to fill a void, to soothe, or to distract from uncomfortable emotions.

I'm going to break it down for you as well as share my own experiences of both emotional eating and binge eating. I'll admit I knew about my tendencies to emotionally eat in the past but it wasn't untill I began writing my program and book that I remembered that I also had a binge eating episode; but more on that later.

30 Years of Healing Past Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS)

I’ve been on a 30 year healing journey from Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS).

As a person of Jamaican heritage born in the United Kingdom, I share many similar experiences of African Americans, in relation to Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome (PTSS) due to our shared history of slavery, colonialism, and systemic oppression. While the historical contexts and post-slavery trajectories differ in the USA, Jamaica and UK, the psychological, social, and economic legacies show parallels.

What is Emotional Eating? Understanding The Impact & Finding Personal Solutions

As you can see from above, emotional eating isn’t just a psychological issue; biological mechanisms also play a significant role. When we eat, our brains releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is associated with pleasure and reward. This reinforces the connection between eating and emotional relief, making it harder to break the cycle.

A 2023 study published in the Journal of Eating Disorders found that emotional eating can alter brain pathways over time, making individuals more reliant on food to regulate their mood . These changes make emotional eating a difficult pattern to break and may contribute to the development of eating disorders such as binge eating disorder.

Feel The Fear +Do It Anyway

I was a shy child. I remember being teased by my family about a particular episode when as a child I hid under the table from my grand-uncle who was visiting my grandmother.

At school I was a bright ‘A’ student, but I did not feel the need to be the student who ‘had all the answers’ or was first to offer the answer to a question. I was quietly confident and happy to keep my head down and do my work diligently.

It wasn’t until my late teen years, when I realised that my shyness might become an issue as I entered the world of dating, internships and work.
